Styling a Vintage Ralph Lauren shirt

September 20, 2019

At the end of August, two friends and I took a little trip to Milan. My favourite part about that trip was without a doubt our visit to the district “Navigli”. This part of Milan attracts both art lovers, as it is home to various art galleries, and foodies, since it’s a great place to enjoy an aperitivo and give the authentic Milanese cuisine a try.

On the last Sunday of every month, a large flea market takes place on both sides of the canal “Naviglio Grande”. Luckily, we were visiting Milan during the last weekend of August, so we spent some time taking a stroll along the different stalls – I read that there are about 400! At one of the stalls, I bought some beautiful lilac coloured crystal pendants, which I will use to make some new necklaces. My favourite purchase, however, is a men’s Ralph Lauren shirt, which I bought for 20 euros – a real bargain! I like how the oversized look of the shirt creates a very nonchalant and effortless look.

The pictures in this blog post are taken in the South of France, where I spent ten days with my family during the month of September. We rented a house on top of the hills of le Lubéron, which provided an amazing view on the picturesque village  of Bonnieux and its surrounding nature.

I’m wearing the Ralph Lauren shirt with a pair of slip in loafers, which I borrowed from my sister; she bought them on Asos. I love how the fact that they are slip on loafers instead of regular ones adds to the nonchalant feel of this look. You might know that I don’t leave the house without a set of golden necklaces. For this outfit, I’m wearing one that has my zodiac sign graved into the golden coin. I’m a capricorn, by the way! My mom and sister have the same necklace, each with their own zodiac sign.

I like to wear the oversized shirt in a few different ways, depending on my mood and the occasion. The first one, as seen above, is the shirt tucked into a pair of high waisted denim shorts. Classic Levis shorts would be perfect for this! Mine are from an older collection of Zara.

Look number 2 – my personal favourite! Since the shirt is so oversized, it can easily be worn as a dress, too. Since I’m quite tall, I’m wearing the same pair of denim shorts underneath it. When I was in the South of France, this was my favourite way to wear it: nonchalant and relaxed. I liked wearing the blouse over a bikini as well.

I also like how the shirt looks when knotted at the front, as pictured above. Another way to create an easy yet fashionable look. On colder days, I would wear the shirt with a pair of vintage looking mom jeans, instead of these denim shorts. Although I feel like the pastel green is a perfect colour to wear during the Spring and Summer months, I’m excited to try to create some autumnal outfits with this shirt, too.

I hope you liked reading this post and that you might have found some inspiration. Now I’m in London, I’d like to look for more vintage and second hand treasures to expand my wardrobe. I’m looking forward to create more of these blog posts on how to style thrifted items!

See you soon, readers!

I'm a copywriter & content creator with a passion for travelling, sustainable fashion & literature. I turned my dream into reality by moving from Ghent to London, where you can find me browsing vintage markets, sipping coffee in my favourite coffee shops early in the morning or spending too much money on vegan food. As an endless wanderer, what truly sets my soul on fire is travelling and the excitement of discovering new places and getting lost in unknown cities. I started this platform to share my travel stories with you, but I'd also love to take you along on my journey into a more sustainable lifestyle, share my appreciation for vintage shopping and thrifting, and motivate you to find joy in the little things.
